Eid Function NY 2012

– QUEENS, N.Y. Elected officials and prominent
community members
attended an Eid cerebration
hosted by the Dawoodi Bohras at
their community center here Sept.
7.
According to a press release
from the group, the celebration
offered an opportunity for the
community to learn more about
local elected officials and
acquaint officials with the
Dawoodi Bohra community here
in New York.
Attendees included New York
City Comptroller John Liu; City
Councilmen Leroy Comrie, Peter
Koo and Robert Jackson; New York
state Assemblywoman Grace
Meng; and Nassau county
Legislator Richard Nicolello; as
well as community members like
Dr. Sudhir Parikh, publisher of
Desi Talk; and Zahid Syed, chairman
of the Nassau County
Human Rights Commission.
The event was kicked off with a
presentation on the Dawoodi
Bohra community and its spiritual
leader Syedna Mohammed
Burhanuddin.
The Dawoodi Bohras are a 1-
million strong sect across the
world with the current center of
leadership being based in
Mumbai where a majority of the
community resides.
According to Yusuf Hatim
Mohemmadi, president of the
local Anjuman-e-Badri, the nonprofit
that administers and manages
the affairs of the Dawoodi
Bohra community in New York
and Connecticut, the event was
an opportunity for the community
to celebrate the culmination of
Ramadan and to reach out to the
local community and promote
mutual understanding.
“Community outreach, especially,
in the current climate, is
extremely important,” Ahmed
Shakir, secretary of the public
relations committee of Anjumane-
Badri, New York, was quoted as
saying.
“And this event was a huge success
in helping us create a more
inclusive environment that
extends beyond our own community
and crosses religious and cultural
barriers.”
Parikh, who was felicitated at
the event along with other guests,
spoke about the importance of
working together as Indians and
as part of the larger South Asian
immigrant community that has
always played a huge role in the
economic progress of the United
States.
